The 3rd Italian Marconian Stations meeting will be hosted in Pisa, 24-25 September, local Italian Radioamateurs' Association (ARI) group operating station IY5PIS at Coltano, the site of a today destroyed TSF station built by Guglielmo Marconi in the early years of 20th century. The station will be operating during the meeting also joined by the annual convention of Mediterraneo DX Club.
The historical and scientific role played by the transmitting station built by Marconi at Coltano will be presented by prof. Filippo Giannetti, associate at Telecommunications at the University of Pisa and a member of Italradio Scientific Committee. A lecture is planned on Saturday morning 24 September at the Villa Medicea, Coltano, Pisa.
The station, totally destroyed in the last months of World War II was never re-built and few remnants do describe the exceptional location and its history. Since the early years of radio, Coltano Station was able to link Italy with Canada and Eritrea and exchange Marconi-grams everywhere in the world.
A few hundred metres from the historical site, a medium wave station (657 kHz
) is still operated by Rai, the Italian public broadcaster, relaying programmes of Radio 1 home service in Italian.
