"The Invention of Italy" is a 3 parts programme presenting the history of Italy now aired by BBC Radio 4. The next part is scheduled on 2 September at 23.30 British Time (22.30 UTC). All broadcast are available on the BBC website but its airing time also favours listening on long and medium waves in Europe. Author Misha Glenny presents the history of Italy from 1494 to the end of WWI. Back at the end of 15th Century Italy was divided in fighting local states, finally invaded by France. A long path to the unification of the country made possible only 3 centuries later.

The 3rd Italian Marconian Stations meeting will be hosted in Pisa, 24-25 September, local Italian Radioamateurs' Association (ARI) group operating station IY5PIS at Coltano, the site of a today destroyed TSF station built by Guglielmo Marconi in the early years of 20th century. The station will be operating during the meeting also joined by the annual convention of Mediterraneo DX Club.

A special DRM broadcast from Vatican Radio in scheduled 22-24 August 2016 during the HFCC Conference in Miami. Broadcast is scheduled at 19.30 UTC beamed to Miami, where engineers, frequency managers from International radio stations in around 30 countries meet for a week to coordinate shortwave frequency schedules in the incoming season (Oct 2016 - Mar 2017).

Short wave transmitting centre at Santa Maria di Galeria (Rome) might be closed ina near future, Vatican Radio French and German newscasts stated, commenting the phasing out of short wave for daily Mass and Rosary prayer on weekdays, as from 1 August 2016. A new organization of Vatican media would enhance investments on digital media.

No more short waves fort two of the most followed lithurgical broadcasts of Vatican Radio. As from 1 August 2016, Latin Mass at 05:30 UTC and Rosary prayer at 18:40 UTC will be broadcast on the usual frequencies only on Sundays and catholic holy days. No motivation is until now available.

RAI News 24 inaugurates weekly English News

Rai News 24, part of Italian public broadcaster Rai, started a weekly English newsreel with most important news from Italy. Every Thursday a new video is posted on their web site. It's the first time Rai resumes a foreign language broadcast since they were all stopped in 2007.

Listeners report Turin 999 kHz medium wave transmitter not switching to tv audio when other transmitters do. Under existing regulations some tv programmes are also available with descriptions to help video impaired people to follow movies and telefilms with the aid of radio. Turin doesn't follow, a exception to be explained.

Croatian Radio and TV (HRT) celebrate 90 and 60 years respectively as Croatian Post put into circulation a special postage stamp on 26 April 2016. The stamp shows a radio announcer and a cameraman and the symbols of HRT.

The first meeting of the International Broadcasting Assembly (IBA) formed at the last EBU General Assembly, will be held in Paris, 19-21 May 2015. IBA will discuss cyber attacks, digital radio, Europe’s refugee crisis. The EBU Media Intelligence Service will also present the results of its survey about international broadcasting.

EBU and the future of Italian Public Broadcaster

European Broadcasting Union (EBU) attended a public consultation on the future of Italian public service media (PSM) held in Rome on 12 April in preparation for renewing RAI's Charter. The consultation included 140 stakeholders expressing their recommendations according to a law passed in late 2015 by Italian Parliament.

3 years after abruptly clonsing down, ERT radio and tv channels are back on the satellite. 4 programmes from Greek radio, including The Voice of Greece, are available now via the Hot Bird satellite all over Europe. TV channel "ERT World" is announced to be aired soon. The station is celebrating 50 years of television in Greece (1966-2016).

Easter celebrations with Pope Francis will be broadcast live from St. Peter's in Rome on Vatican Radio short waves to Africa and Asia. Daytime frequencies on 21 MHz band. Full coverage starting on Saturday 26 March at 19.25 UTC through Sunday morning (7.55-10.30 UTC) to the Regina Coeli prayer on Monday 28 March.

On Sunday evening, 19.30 UTC a new English broadcast will be aired to Western Africa from Radio Japan (NHK World). The transmitting site is also new for NHK: Santa Maria di Galeria, Vatican City State, in central Italy. Shortwave are still alive.

New Short Wave Schedules in Italian as from 27 March

On 27 March 2016 short wave schedules will change to the new operational timings and frequencies as Europe will switch to the Daylight Saving Time, UTC+ 2 hours in Italy and most of Central and Western Europe. 8 Italian speaking stations are adapting their schedules, 27 frequencies affected.

Fr. Lombardi to leave Vatican Radio

Father Federico Lombardi is to bid farewell to Vatican Radio at the end of February. Vatican Radio reports he will stay as Director of the Press Office of the Holy See. Fr. Lombardi's service at Vatican Radio ends after 26 years. He was director of programmes and, since 2005, the General Director. Italradio expressed deep gratitude to Fr Lombardi for his lasting support to Italian language international broadcasting.

Spain: A Prize for Defending Short Wave Service

Spanish "Plataforma en Defensa de la Onda Corta de REE" will be awarded with Voces del Mar Prize (Voices of the Sea) in Vigo, Spain on 26 February 2016. The "Plataforma" - a informal group defending Spanish short wave service - succeeded in re-opening Radio Exterior short wave services after a sudden closing down last year. Italradio also takes part in the group as a lively example for Italian speaking international broadcasting.

On 13 February 2016 the 5th World Radio Day will be celebrated in Florence at Radio Toscana studios. The FM regional station will host Italradio experts together with journalists and technicians focusing on Radio in emergency and relief, this year theme of World Radio Day. Special attention will be paid to Vatican Radio participation to HFCC short wave emergency network, a unique within the Italian speaking stations.

After Radio Romania, the Voice of Turkey and Radio Fiume (Rijeka) a 4th Italian International broadcast is now on th air at 15.00 UTC. Radio Tunis Chaine Internationale (963 kHz) modified its schedule as from 4 January 2016 shifting Italian one hour ahead to host their German programme at 14.00 UTC.

Cesky Rozhlas DID NOT leave Medium, Long Wave

Medium Wave stations are still active as well as Long Wave 270 kHz in the Czech Republic, listeners confirm to Italradio. Due to a mis-interpretation of changes for the "Plus" channel, transferred to FM on 5 January 2016, we were led to believe all the MW network was to be silenced. Our apologies to all our readers and a real good news, finally.
