Media Isolationism: France, Germany out of Medium Waves

By the end of 2015, French and German public radio networks will abandon all the Medium Wave frequencies still used on local and national basis. At midnight (CET) 31 December 2015, all stations will close down, a irreversible decision. Firm protest by Italradio.

Serbian International Radio to close down on 30 June 2015

Serbian International Radio workers started a street protest as they learned about a plan by Belgrade government to step down broadcasts on 30 June 2015 after a re-organisation of Serbian radio and tv according to new regulations. Serbian International Radio broadcasts in 12 languages, including Italian and English.

Following the dismantling of Bologna medium wavw station, the area, not far from Marconi's home town is to be converted in a new shopping mall. Protests reached cultural heritage authorities but don't apparently convince local administrators.

Vatican Radio Trials DRM+ on FM 103.80 MHz in Rome

Vatican Radio carried out DRM+ trials on FM (VHF band II) in Rome during December 2011 on its frequency 103.8 MHz using 200W RMS. The results will be published soon but they are expetected as very positive.

Easter Special Coverage on Vatican Radio

Special broadcasts from St. Peter's Basilica in Rome are scheduled by Vatican Radio to cover the Pope's celebrations on Easter Time. Starting on Friday 22 April and through 25 April more than 12 hours live broadcasts with multilingual commentary.

Special Easter Time broadcasts from Vatican Radio focus on Oriental lithurgies marking the coincidence in both Julian (Eastern) and Gregorian (Western) calendars of Easter Sunday on 24 April. Special Armenian, Russian and Ukrainian rites will be broadcast on 21, 22, 23 April 2001, at 0730 UTC.

Italian Words: "Pizza" First, "Gazzetta" and "Banca" contending

Teaching and propagating Italian language are the main goals of the "Società Dante Alighieri". From their website they proposed a poll about most important Italian words according to their European readers.

Radio is not included but the list of best known Italian words in Europe presents "Gazzetta" as the first in Malta, where both local language and soccer supporters agree the name of a daily sports newspaper is able to represent a special contact between Italy and Malta.

Switzerland finding a new way for its Medium Wave

Swiss Telecommunication Authority (BAKOM) has launched a public consultation about the future of Medium Wave in Switzerland.

As from 1.1.2009 only a French speaking station will operate on MW from Switzerland. Italian transmitter closed down in June 2008. New operators may have access to three free frequencies.

Radio Maria: the last and only Short Wave from Italy

Listeners report Radio Maria double modulation AM-DRM raeching as far as Portugal. The last and only Italian Short Wave transmitter operates from Andrate, North-West Italy and was recently renovated. Sporadic-E propagation is giving a new opportunity to long distance recption but the trasmitter is part of an experimental service for local purposes on 26 MHz.

Kenya's Italian Radio back on the air

In a correspondence posted in the Italian section of this portal Mr LiPerni, the technician supervising the Italian FM station in Kenya, confirmed the transmitter has been reactivated in a new location about 10 kms from Malindi, Indian Ocean coast.

RAI International stops Short Waves and 26 Languages

RAI International confirms they're abandoning all short wave broadcasts as from 1 October, an announcement being read in every broadcast. Newscasts in 26 languages will be totally ceased. Broadcasts in Italian will be concentrated via the Internet and satellites. "Notturno Italiano" will remain only medium waves.

Rai International Winding Up Foreign Broadcasts?

30 September might mark the final stop for the RAI International foreign languages broadcasts, trade unionists state in meetings with members of the station.

Transmitting centre in Prato Smeraldo (Rome) are said they already received orders to cease broadcasting by the end of the month.

Radio Budapest: The End, confirmed

Radio Budapest confirmed the closing down of all foreign broadcasts as from July 1st. Saturday June 30th, the latest broadcasts in English, German, Russian and Spanish will be aired on shortwave.

An announcement has been read in the German programme. Other broadcasts are mainly programming old features.

Radio Japan Confirming Cuts

In a letter to their monitors around the world, Radio Japan confirms the cuts on shortwave broadcasts - also affecting Italian service - planned as from October 2007.

A wider international TV service will require more financing.

According to Japanese news agency Kyodo quoted by the BBC Monitoring Service, Radio Japan (NHK) is planning major cuts on its international radio programmes as from October 2007. Italian programme is also affected.

NHK would save about Euro 700,000 yearly to be used for international NHK TV service.

Footnote: Italradio does hope the project will be reconsidered. TV does not provide a real universal service and multilingual broadcasts does assure Japan a worlwide audiece at very reasonable cost.

Swiss Radio may broadcast in English again - A new DAB channel planned?

Swiss Radio is planning a new DAB radio channel in English to serve tourists and international public within the country.

Notwithstanding multilingual broadcasts in Italian, Frech, German (national languages) Switzerland seems missing the dismantled Swiss Radio International service, closed down two years ago.

About 5% of the Swiss are Italian native-speakers.

Footnote: Italian native-speakers are spread among Italy (Republic of) and neighboring areas in Switzerland (Canton Ticino and parts of Graubunden) Istria and Dalmatia (parts of Slovenia and Croatia) as well as in San Marino (an enclave of Italy). Conventionally the Vatican City (the state providing a territory for the Holy See in Rome) is also a part of the Italian language area.

Raiway and Telespazio Merging?

A possible merger between Raiway (the RAI transmitters' managing company) and Telespazio (the Italian satellite service company) is positively commented by high ranking official of the Italian state radio-tv and the Ministry of Communications.
