DRM+ Tests in Rome, Vatican Radio released Study

FM Band DRM+ tests carried out by Vatican Radio in December 2011 have been disclosed at DRM technical meeting at ITU HQ in Geneva. Tests verified DRM+ performance in a difficult interference scenario such as the FM VHF band II (103.8 MHz) in Rome.

Medium wave stations in Aosta, Campobasso, Cuneo, Rimini, Sondrio and Trapani are to be closed down within this week, sources. Potenza and Foggia also reported down.

Italian multilingual province Alto Adige / Suedtirol has lost its last three medium wave transmitters. Stations in Bolzano / Bozen, Bressanone / Brixen, Brunico / Bruneck closed down.

Earlier this month listeners around the world reported some short wave broadcasts seemed to have been resumed by Vatican Radio. Albanian and Nordic languages affected. It was only a brief mistake on a transmitter.

On 6 January Pope Benedict XVI Epiphany celebrations will be broadcast by Vatican Radio. The station will also broadcast the Christmas Lithurgy according to the Julian Calendar on the following day 7 January.

More Worries and Incertitude for Italian Medium Waves

Are Italian Medium Waves really so near to disappear that a announcement was necessary to inform listeners to switch to FM network? Last 14 December local newscasts in at least twelve out of twenty Italian regions informed listeners about frequency changes and/or suppression of Medium Wave broadcasts. The announcement was aired only once but worries are growing about a possible winding up of all Medium Wave operations by RAI.

Vatican Radio has decided: short and medium Wave transmissions to most of Europe and the Americas will be cut off, as from 1 July 2012, the Director General, Fr Federico Lombardi, told press earlier today and called fora "new chapter in the history of Vatican Radio" evolving "from Short Waves to new communications strategies".

Copper raiders have entered the area of Bari - Ceglie del Campo medium wave station, local sources state as the station (1116 kHz) has been silenced since last Friday.

La Spezia (Nort-Western Italy) is the first city where Marconi showed a practical use of his invention shortly after he started experimenting at home and in Britain. As early as in July 1897 Marconi worked at La Spezia Italian Navy Base along with military experts to make radio to serve navigation. Most of the objects used in those days are now visible via the Internet.

RAI Medium Wave transmitter in Bologna closed down at 24:00 hours local time (23:00 UTC) on 28 February 2012. The unexpected decision has been taken by RAI managers. No official explanation given.

Italian public broadcaster RAI plans to save 94.8 million euro, newspaper "La Repubblica" reports. International activities will be strongly reduced. Radio night show "Notturno Italiano" will be closed down after 60 years as from 1 January 2012.

RAI International will stop to produce its programmes, both on tv and radio as from 1 January 2012. Viewers and listeners outside Italy will therefore find national programming on all satellite, medium wave and Internet channels.

UNESCO to celebrate a World Radio Day

UNESCO's Executive Board approved item 13 of its provisional agenda "Proclamation of a World Radio Day" to be celebrated each 13 February, the day the United Nations established the concept of United Nations Radio. General Conference should later decide to bring the proposal to the Secretary General of the UN to be set for approval by UN General Assembly.
