From 24 to 26 December 2014, Christmas celebrations will be broadcast by Vatican Radio on short wave. The first Christmas Mass will be aired in Chinese at 16 UTC on 24 December, already the early Christmas day hours in the Far East. Pope Francis will celebrate the Holy Night Mass at 20.30 UTC and will address his blessings at 11 UTC on 25 and 26 December.

Italian International Broadcasts as from 26 October 2014

New schedules have taken effect on 26 October 2014 as Italy and most European countries move their clocks 24 hours back to UTC+1 (CET). Changes reported by HFCC focusing on Radio Tirana (one hour later?) and Radio Cairo (two frequencies?).

Starting on 27 October 2014 Rai Radio 1 will add a new 5 minutes regional information update at 18.30 CET (17.30 UTC). New opportunities for medium wave listeners, also from abroad.

Pope Francis visits Tirana, Albania on 21 September 2014, a special broadcast from Vatican Radio. English, Italian commentaries included. Some short waves also operational. Radio Tirana also to be monitored on a historical day for Albania.

Italian public broadcaster RAI has extended their regional morning newscasts by 2 minutes. Midday regional news loose 2 minutes, unfortunately. New timings follow news pace reshape for Radio 1 mediumwave and FM schedule.

Shortwave and Disaster Risk Reduction, Twelve Helpful Stations

Twelve international broadcasters and shortwave transmission providers have accepted the invitation to trial broadcasts scheduled on the occasion of the Media Summit on Climate Change, ICTs and Disaster Risk Reduction in Jakarta, Indonesia on 4-6 June 2014. Vatican Radio the only station to take part in the trial from a European location.

Listeners report Radio Tunis Chain Internationale, a multi-lingual service from Tunisian Radio, including Italian and English broadcast, is back on Medium Wave 963 kHz. No confirmation has been received until now if the change is to be considered definitive.

Ondamedia Broadcast, a Italian Medium Wave low power station in Bologna area, is changing its frequency to 1548 kHz (ex 1512 kHz) as from 31 January 2014.

RAI MW Stations, a (short) list

A recently published research by Italian Communications Authority (AGCOM) focused on possible developments in medium wave use after most of stations were abondoned by Rai, the nationwide public radio. The document also include annex about MW frequencies allocated to Italy at Geneva Conference in 1975 and the very short list of active RAI stations.

News about the future of International broadcasting from Russia are still uncertain as a Presidential Decree ruled on 9 December 2013 how RIA Novosti Press Agency and the Voice of Russia should be closed down. A new national Press Agency "Rossiya Segodnya" is to start operations. Italian programme from Moscow still on the air.

DAB+ Increasing Coverage in Italy

Italian Region Friuli - Venezia Giulia (North East) is the second to be included in the DAB+ network enlargement this year, trasmitter service Raiway confirmed.

Northern Italy, Rome and other areas covering 40 p.c. of Italian population now receive public broadcaster RAI DAB+ network.

Swiss TV "prohibited" for Italian Border Village?

A village by Italian Lago Maggiore, just a few kilomters from Swiss shore of the lake is making headlines after was sued by Swiss Radio & TV for having switched on its own repeaters of Swiss TV programmes. The transmitter has been duly authorized by Italian Communications Ministry but Swiss public tv questions about copyrights limited to Switzerland only.

Italian programme from Radio Tirana is still aired on 7490 kHz due to technical problems at the short wave transmitter previously choosen for the winter 2013-2014 frequency 6040 kHz.

As from 01.00 UTC on Sunday 27 October, 2013 Italy and many other European nations will go back to CET (UTC+1h). New seasonal schedules will take effect at the same time in most of international broadcasting stations. On 4 October Pope Francis will visit Assisi (Central Italy) the hometown of the Saint he had adopted the name. Vatican Radio will follow the event also on short wave, starting at 08.15 UTC.

Voice of Russia to stop Broadcasts in Italian and 8 more languages

As from 1 January 2014 Italian the Voice of Russia could abandon Italian broadcasts. Eight more languages are affected by plans to reduce broadcasts from Moscow. Protests raising from listeners.

DRM+ Tests in Rome, Vatican Radio released Study

FM Band DRM+ tests carried out by Vatican Radio in December 2011 have been disclosed at DRM technical meeting at ITU HQ in Geneva. Tests verified DRM+ performance in a difficult interference scenario such as the FM VHF band II (103.8 MHz) in Rome.
