Following the dismantling of Bologna medium wavw station, the area, not far from Marconi's home town is to be converted in a new shopping mall. Protests reached cultural heritage authorities but don't apparently convince local administrators.

European Union believes the future of radio distribution will be multi-platform and that terrestrial distribution is still the sole platform for truly mobile reception, in particular in cars, a letter to the Association of Community Radio Broadcasters.

UNESCO to celebrate a World Radio Day

UNESCO's Executive Board approved item 13 of its provisional agenda "Proclamation of a World Radio Day" to be celebrated each 13 February, the day the United Nations established the concept of United Nations Radio. General Conference should later decide to bring the proposal to the Secretary General of the UN to be set for approval by UN General Assembly.

According to Spanish Radiolisteners' Association monthly review "El Dial" (September 2011) a formal bid to declare International Radio Broadcasting as a part of World Intangible Heritage has been deposited on 23 Augost at UNESCO Regionale Office at San José de Costa Rica. The initiative has been taken by Berny Solano Solano, a jurist and listener of Radio Netherlands, following sharp cuts announced for the Dutch broadcasting station.

Council of Europe to discuss Electrosmog Question

The potential dangers of electromagnetic fields and their effect on the environment will be a central focus of the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to be held in Kyiv (Ukraine) on Friday 27 May 2011 following the transfer of the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers to Ukraine.

Easter Special Coverage on Vatican Radio

Special broadcasts from St. Peter's Basilica in Rome are scheduled by Vatican Radio to cover the Pope's celebrations on Easter Time. Starting on Friday 22 April and through 25 April more than 12 hours live broadcasts with multilingual commentary.

EBU Focusing on DRM Developments

The European Broadcasting Unione has invited broadcasters, regulators, manufacturers and all industry representatives interested in digital radio to discuss the current state of the DRM system globally, in Geneva, 26 November.

Italian Words: "Pizza" First, "Gazzetta" and "Banca" contending

Teaching and propagating Italian language are the main goals of the "Società Dante Alighieri". From their website they proposed a poll about most important Italian words according to their European readers.

Radio is not included but the list of best known Italian words in Europe presents "Gazzetta" as the first in Malta, where both local language and soccer supporters agree the name of a daily sports newspaper is able to represent a special contact between Italy and Malta.

Italian to join European Radio Project in 2012 only

Italian will join the "European Radio Project" by 2012 when all official 23 EU languages should be covered by the station funded by the European Commission and to be launched in 2008 with programmes in English, French, German, Spanish and Polish and translations in into Bulgarian, Greek, Hungarian, Portuguese and Romanian. Radio Netherlands, the Deutsche Welle and other international broadcasters are involved in the project. Future Italian partners are still to found.

The Holy Father's message for World Communications Day has been published in conjunction with the Memorial of St. Francis de Sales, patron of writers (January 24). The theme chosen by Pope Benedict XVI for the 41st World Communications Day 2007 (May 20) is: "Children and the Media: A Challenge for Education".

TV Capodistria via satellite

TV Capodistria will broadcast via satellite (in clear) as from September 1st, 2006.

For the first time Italian minorities living in Istria and Dalmatia as well as many from the Diaspora followed to WWII are allowed to watch the channel on the Hot Bird 13° East satellite.

Italian among the easiest languages to learn, US State Dept. says

According to the U.S. State Department Italian is not so hard to learn for American English native speakers.

Experience shows American diplomats tend to learn Italian easier than other languages including some European such as German or Greek.

Strike at Magyar Radio

A two hours alert strike is planned at Magyar Radio next Thursday, Radio Budapest told in its newscasts.

Footnote: Italradio express deep concern about the future of Radio Budapest especially for the Italian section which is successfully granting a very good service.

FCC officially adopt DRM for HF Broadcasting

The US Federal Communications Commission has modified its rules and regulations in accordance with decisions made at the World Radiocommunications Conference in 2003. Among other things, the Commission has sanctioned the DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) system as the required system for digital broadcasting on shortwave.

In the Italian area only Vatican Radio is actively experimenting DRM.

From 1 Aug to 31 Oct dxers can get a special QSL from Radio Budapest via Vienna's dx club ADXB-OE. The initiative involves all international broadcasts from Radio Budapest.
