As from 12 September 2016 the medium wave transmitter at Croce Bianca di Pirano (Beli Kriz, Piran, Istria) wil be submitted at some planned maintanance works, including shortening the antenna mast. Both Italian (1170 kHz) and Slovenian (549 kHz) frequencies will remain off air for about 4 weeks.

"The Invention of Italy" is a 3 parts programme presenting the history of Italy now aired by BBC Radio 4. The next part is scheduled on 2 September at 23.30 British Time (22.30 UTC). All broadcast are available on the BBC website but its airing time also favours listening on long and medium waves in Europe. Author Misha Glenny presents the history of Italy from 1494 to the end of WWI. Back at the end of 15th Century Italy was divided in fighting local states, finally invaded by France. A long path to the unification of the country made possible only 3 centuries later.

Short wave transmitting centre at Santa Maria di Galeria (Rome) might be closed ina near future, Vatican Radio French and German newscasts stated, commenting the phasing out of short wave for daily Mass and Rosary prayer on weekdays, as from 1 August 2016. A new organization of Vatican media would enhance investments on digital media.

EBU and the future of Italian Public Broadcaster

European Broadcasting Union (EBU) attended a public consultation on the future of Italian public service media (PSM) held in Rome on 12 April in preparation for renewing RAI's Charter. The consultation included 140 stakeholders expressing their recommendations according to a law passed in late 2015 by Italian Parliament.

Fr. Lombardi to leave Vatican Radio

Father Federico Lombardi is to bid farewell to Vatican Radio at the end of February. Vatican Radio reports he will stay as Director of the Press Office of the Holy See. Fr. Lombardi's service at Vatican Radio ends after 26 years. He was director of programmes and, since 2005, the General Director. Italradio expressed deep gratitude to Fr Lombardi for his lasting support to Italian language international broadcasting.

Media Isolationism: France, Germany out of Medium Waves

By the end of 2015, French and German public radio networks will abandon all the Medium Wave frequencies still used on local and national basis. At midnight (CET) 31 December 2015, all stations will close down, a irreversible decision. Firm protest by Italradio.

On Sunday 28 June at 12 o'clock local time (02.30 UTC) Radio Italiana 531 in Adelaide switched broadcasts to new studios at Hindmarsh, the station announced of their Facebook profile. This year the station is celebrating 40 years since its first transmission from 5UV Adelaide.

Italian language station in North Adriatic Capodistria (Koper, Slovenia) is facing a abrupt stop as Italian cultural institutions wish to redirect funds from satellite broadcasts to a local tv station in southern Histria (now part of Croatia) to cover Italian minorities in the area. Hotbird satellite now in use is reaching a much wider area also including Italy and diaspora communities.

Switzerland's Switch to DAB Being Questioned

Public and private broadcasters in Switzerland agreed to switch off their FM network to DAB+ by 2024. The decision is now being questioned by a referendum about the recently renovated Federal Broadcasting Law and a private radio leader told the press: "There's no Plan B" if people's decision will be against the law, switching to DAB+ will be made impossible.

RAI Historical Sites to be sold

Italian press reported about possible sales of two RAI historical sites. The tallest former MW station in Caltanissetta (Sicily) is to be acquired by local authorities to be preserved as a part of city skyline. In Florence RAI would sell the building hosting radio-tv studios to transfer operations in a smaller one.

ERT Building in Athens Evacuated

Earlier today 7 November 2013 police interrupted the activity of Greek radio and tv ERT employees four months after the public broadcaster was closed down. Broadcasts have been continued through the Internet and a few transmitters. Some could be active yet, including at least one frequency on short wave. Police is checking ERT building at Aghia Paraskevi in Athens.

No Signal, AFN Italy FM Radio and the US Shutdown

Motorists report AFN radio is no longer available on 106 MHz on Tuscany coast, Italy. After last February Livorno studios were closed down, broadcasts came through Vicenza AFN station. Press reports confirm service is partly restored in the world network of American Forces broadcasting but Government Shutdown is still affecting them.

Radio and TV Capodistria, the popular Italian language stations in Norther Adriatic area, will continue their broadcasts via satellite Hotbird 13° East.

Funds were made available for further 12 months by the Italian Community in Slovenia.

Italian public broadcaster RAI plans to save 94.8 million euro, newspaper "La Repubblica" reports. International activities will be strongly reduced. Radio night show "Notturno Italiano" will be closed down after 60 years as from 1 January 2012.

British DX Club monthly revue reports this month about radio in Northern Italy in the final years of WWII, when the area was under the government of the Italian Social Republic (RSI) a shortly lived Fascist state continuing the war with Germany after Italy obtained a armistice on 8 September 1943. Shortwave also went North to stay in Busto Arsizio (Lombardy) also some years after Italy was liberated.

Fire at Madagascar Relay Station

Radio Netherlands Worldwide reports about a fire in the high voltage room of the external mains power supply at their relay station in Madagascar. According to the station firefighters from the Madagascan capital Antananarivo managed to bring the blaze under control within hours. Due to damages the station has suspended for at least three days services to large parts of Africa and Southeast Asia. No details have been given about Vatican Radio broadcasts relayed to Africa from Madagascar.

At its 2009 annual meeting in Nashville, Tennessee on May 8, the National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters (NASB) adopted a resolution encouraging radio receiver manufacturers ‘to develop and produce as a high priority simple to operate, inexpensive DRM receivers,» Radio Netherland's Media Network reports.
